Choose the FDC database that matches the status you expect

A Florida prison search should start with the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) offender search when the person is or was in state prison or state supervision. The Corrections Offender Network separates inmate population, release, and supervised-population information. Read which database produced the result instead of treating every FDC hit as current prison custody.

Search with the strongest identifier available

  • ✓
    DC number

Use the six-character Department of Corrections number when known; it is more specific than a common name.

  • ✓
    Name

Enter the committed name carefully and compare the returned details before accepting a match.

  • ✓
    Alias

Use the alias option when the person is known by another name.

  • ✓
    Result details

Keep the DC number, institution/status, and search date with your notes.

Know what an absent FDC result does not prove

FDC is not a universal Florida custody database. A county jail booking, a person on a county-run supervision program, or a local case can sit outside the state-prison population. If you know the arrest or case occurred in a particular county and the person does not appear in FDC, check the county sheriff/jail or court custodian rather than concluding that the person is not in custody or has no case.

Read release and supervision results as status-specific records

The release database and supervised-population information answer different questions from current prison placement. A release listing can include a completed release or a scheduled release, so read the status and date shown on the record. Supervision can continue after physical prison custody ends. Preserve the exact FDC category with the person’s record so “released from prison” is not mistaken for “no longer under correctional supervision.”

Verify a time-sensitive location or release before acting

FDC cautions that online information can lag a current location, status, or release change. Before traveling to a facility, sending legal mail, arranging transportation, or relying on a near-term release date, confirm the current status through the institution or FDC contact identified by the official record. For eligible victims who need status-change notice, use FDC’s victim-notification process rather than repeatedly refreshing a saved search page.
